e； meanwhile； I find that the means employed invariably determine the nature of the end achieved。 Indeed； as Mahatma Gandhi was never tired of insisting； the means are the end in its preliminary5 stages。 Men have put forth enormous efforts to make their world a better place to live in； but except in regard to gadgets； plumbing and hygiene； their sussess has been pathetically small。 “Hell；” as the proverb has it； “is paved with good intentions。” And so long as we go on trying to realize our ideals by bad or merely inappropriate means； our good intentions will e to the same bad ends。 In this consists the tragedy and the irony of history。
Can I； as an individual； do anything to make future history a little less tragic and less ironic than history past and present？ I believe I can。 As a citizen； I can use all my intelligence and all my good will to develop political means that shall be of the same kind and quality as the ideal ends which I am trying to achieve。 And as a person； as a psychophysical organism； I can learn how to get out of the way； so that the divine source of my life and consciousness can e out of eclipse and shine through me。

匆忙的蝴蝶

有一个人在农场附近的森林里漫步。他热爱大自然，喜欢观察飞鸟，寻找小动物的踪迹。
一天，这个人发现了一只蝴蝶的茧。茧正挂在一棵树的树枝上。能目睹茧破蝶出这一自然奇迹，他感到很激动，每天他都不安地去看看这只茧。几天过去了，茧没有任何活动或生命的迹象。
终于有一天，茧裂开了一个小口。于是，那个人坐在林地上，准备欣赏这场“表演”。他看着蝴蝶用了数小时的时间从一个小洞里向外挣扎。
这个过程一直在持续。那个人越来越没有耐心。接着，茧中的生命好像完全停止了挣扎，看上去它好像已经用尽全力，再也不能更进一步了。
那个人决定帮蝴蝶一把。他回到家，找了把剪刀，然后返回森林，把残留的一点茧剪断。蝴蝶很容易就脱离了出来，但是它的身体又肿又小，翅膀也是萎缩的。那个人坐了下来，继续观察蝴蝶。
他期待着在某一个时刻，蝴蝶的翅膀会变大，伸展开来足以支撑它的身体。他也设想着，蝴蝶的身体能及时变小。然而，两者都未发生。
事实上，这只蝴蝶一生也只能用它肿胀的身体和褶皱的翅膀在周围爬行。它永远也飞不起来了。
这个仁慈又心急的人，不明白茧的束缚与蝴蝶的挣扎是必要的。在蝴蝶从小孔挣扎出来的过程中，液体从身体里挤出，进入翅膀。只有这样，一旦从茧中获得自由，蝴蝶才能展翅飞翔。
有时，奋斗正是我们生存的必需。如果我们没有任何障碍地生存，我们只会成为跛子。
A Rushed Butterfly

A man was walking in the forest near his farm。 The man loved nature。 He watched birds and looked for signs of small animals。
One day； the man found the cocoon1 of a butterfly。 It was hanging from the branch of a tree。 He was excited to witness this miracle of nature as it unfolded。 Anxiously2； the man checked on the cocoon everyday。 Several days passed with no sign of movement or life。
Finally； one day a small opening appeared in the cocoon。 The man sat down on the forest floor； ready to enjoy the show。 He watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole。
The process was endless and the man was getting impatient。 Then the creature in the cocoon seemed to stop making progress altogether。 It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and as though it could go no further。
The man decided to help the butterfly。 He went home and found a pair of scissors。 He returned to the forest and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon。 The butterfly then emerged3 easily but it had a swollen body and small； shriveled4 wings。 The man sat down and continued to watch the butterfly。
He expected that； at any moment； the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body。 He also supposed that the body would contract in time。 Neither of these things happened。
In fact； the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings。 It never was able to fly。
What the man； in his kindness and haste； did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly was necessary。 As the butterfly fought to get through the tiny opening； fluid was forced from the body of the butterfly into its wings。
This way； it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon。
Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our lives。 If we were allowed to go through our lives without any obstacles； it would cripple5 us。

如果你是一个中等水平的读者，你可以以每分钟300字的速度读一本中等水平的书。但是，除非你每天这样坚持下去，否则你是无法保持这个水平的。你也不可能以这个速度阅读科学、数学、农业、商业方面的书，或是对你来说主题生疏、不熟悉的书。你绝不会以这种速度阅读诗歌，或是一目十行地阅读小说中的精彩段落；然而，对于多数小说、传记、游记以及有关个人嗜好或你感兴趣的书籍而言，如果你是一个中等水平的读者，以这个速度阅读，在意思的理解上就不会有什么障碍，还可以享受其中的乐趣。
数学统计不是永远都可行的，但也可以考虑一下这些数据：如果一个中等水平的读者以每分钟300字的速度读一本一般的书籍，那么l5分钟可以读4，500字，一个星期便能读3l，500字，一个月可以读126，000字，一年12个月的阅读量可以达到1，512；000字。这就是一个中等水平的读者每天只读15分钟的书在一年内可以达到的阅读量。
书籍的篇幅在60，000字到100，000字之间不等，平均值大约为75，000字。中等阅读水平的人，读一般书籍，每天读15分钟，一年就可以读20本书，真是很多本书啊，是从美国公共图书馆借书的人们的阅读量的三倍，而且这很容易实现。
威廉·奥斯罗爵士是现代最伟大的内科医师之一。他曾在约翰·霍普金斯医学院教书，最后留在了麦吉尔大学。如今，很多赫赫有名的医师都曾是他的学生。几乎所有正在工作的医生们都曾从他的医学教科书中获益。他对医学最突出的贡献之一就是他尚未出版的一本记录人们死亡情形的笔记。

二战的最后一年，我在服役时发现我所在的中队里有一个一等兵的知识非同寻常的渊博。我在他的201号档案中读到了一段很特别的、有关入伍前后经历的描述：在四年的服役生涯中，有两年的时间他是在海外，在这期间虽然没有什么丰功伟绩，但却一直受到奖励。如果所有推荐信都能递到上面，他不仅获得了军衔，估计早就成了上尉。可是，他还是个一等兵。尽管部队中的提升需要学历、工作效率、忠诚，还有其他一些标准，与此同时机遇也起着非常重要的作用。除了有一次例外，他不是被调动，就是遇到有关组织机构的条文限制；不是规定有了新变动，就是上级填错了表格，要么就是将表格忘在了他右手的第三个抽屉里。总之，在部队中，他一直是个一等兵，可是，他在读书中却获益颇深，在服役期间，他的读书量太令人惊叹了。
我对他的读书方法感到很好奇。有一天，在询问他之前，我发现了问题的部分答案。每天，士兵们都要队列操练一个小时。在这段时间中，至少会有一段很长的休息时间。我第一次去操练场的时候，就惊奇地发现在“稍息”令下达后，在长长的队伍中，有一个人拿出了一本袖珍书，站着看了起来。
